Our precious Chance has made his final voyage, to cross the rainbow bridge. Our friend and veterinarian came to our house to help him on his way, and another friend and I took his little body to be cremated. Our hearts are broken, Jeff’s lap is empty. We’ve been through this many times before, but it never, ever, gets any easier.
We fostered Chance from a high-kill shelter near Atlanta, Ga in 2010. Our intention was to find him the best home possible, which turned out to be our home. From the time we decided to keep him in our pack, (foster failure), he was decidedly Jeff’s dog. They were, and have been, nearly inseperable for these 13 years, from our travels across the country and Canada with our “Three Pups in a Pop-Up” team to long-distance, full-time living on sailboats on both coasts, The Bahamas and Mexico. He was a good-will ambassador for homeless dogs all over North America. Alas, they are all now reunited in Doggy Heaven.
Chance’s favorite seat has always been his “Diddy’s” lap, and my heart hurts for that empty lap now.
Here is a blog post I wrote about him 13 years ago.
Even while Jeff was driving, “Channy’s” place was in Jeff’s lap (I know…don’t preach). He loved sticking his hear out “The Magic Winnow” on rural roads. In Canada and in Mexico we were pulled over by the cops as our little fluff-ball stuck his head out of the driver’s side window and wagged his tail. Both times, we were merely given a warning. (Of course, those warning went in one ear and out the other).
Chance kept us entertained with his antics. He was a tiny dog, at 10 lbs, but had a huge presence during his early and prime years. He was always on dolphin patrol on the sailboat, and alerted us to their presence long before we saw them. Here is a video of Channy and the dolphins.

Chance was equally at home in the mountains, living on the road in the camper, as he was sailing on the oceans. As long as he was by our side, he was happy.
We will miss you, Channy. We already do. Thank you for letting us love you, and for loving us back unconditionally.
Run free with your friends. Give them our love. Sweet dreams, Little Man.
So sorry to hear this bad news about Chance, Jules. I know how it feels when our furry buddies leave us.
Bet she is now sailing away to clearer waters and sunny days.
Un abrazo para ti y Jeff
Muchas gracias, Loreto, our hearts hurt. But he is free of pain to run with his buddies now.
Thank you for these words and all the fotos of Chance. I feel like I know him so much better than the little dog I met just a little while back. Bless these rescue dogs that lift us up and bring the light into our lives everyday. He joins others running ( and paddle boarding or sailing)free that we’ve all loved.💙🙌🏽🙏🏼💙
Thank you, Marai, for all your support and love.
What a beautiful tribute. Animals can play such a special role in our lives if we let them.
Thank you, Terri. We are really hurting, but so blessed to have had him in our lives for so long.
I am in tears reading this. I know how much we love our fur children. Chance was never a big fan of me( Jeff was his person). I am thinking of you guys
Thanks, Angie. We miss him terribly, and Jeff is really feeling his loss.
So sorry. Love the pic with the wind in his fur. What a great companion and traveling partner.
THanks, Duwan. HE was the perfect travel partner.
Oh I’m sorry to hear this day has arrived. Such a sad occasion. I hope that you and Jeff will receive some comfort as you remember the generous amount of love brought to your daily lives by Chance. Sincere condolences.
Beautiful memories of such a loving and gentle pupster. He brought you joy … forever near and dear to your hearts.
Sadness indeed to lose a member of your tribe.
Big love ❤️
Thank you, dear friend. There is a big empty hole in our lives now.
